Platform for Effective Communication
The new-format ExpoPetersburg exhibition and convention was a resounding success: participants expressed their appreciation for the project, which enabled them to communicate in a common language, and without intermediaries.
Specialists were able to discuss the market situation, find solutions to current problems, and make forecasts of the future during the exhibition and convention, which took place on 29–30 November. Representatives of all segments of the industry were present at the plenary session, ‘The Untapped Potential of Exhibitions’: government authorities, organisers of conventions and exhibitions, exhibitors, and industry unions and associations.
Experts noted that a pressing concern is the low level of activity by participants in exhibitions, who often do not know how to prepare properly, what to expect, or how to assess the effect. Specialists proposed training seminars for exhibitors to address this problem. Sergei Voronkov, Executive Director of ExpoForum, noted, “In the next exhibition season, we plan to organise workshops, a series of training seminars for exhibition participants, at which specialists will talk about effective advertising for a company or organisation at the exhibition and developing a programme for visits to the exhibit by partners and potential clients.” Many participants in the discussion supported this initiative. For example, Alexei Yakovlev, Head of the Media Relations, Marketing, and Convention and Exhibition Activities Department of the Committee for Economic Development, Industrial Policy, and Trade stated that he would welcome similar initiatives and that he is ready to provide rooms and other resources as necessary.
In addition, one of the obstacles to the further development of the business tourism industry in St Petersburg is the lack of a convention bureau. The establishment of such a bureau was discussed at the meeting of the city’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry Exhibition Committee, which was held during the exhibition and convention. As a result of this meeting, a letter was prepared for Georgy Poltavchenko, Governor of St Petersburg, expressing the need for developing and approving a Concept for developing work on exhibitions and conventions at the city government level.
On 20 February 2013 ExpoForum will launch a new project for exhibitors: special educational seminars which will help exhibition participants to intelligently prepare for events and assess their impact.
