ExpoForum is a new growing point for infrastructure of Saint Petersburg
Increasing the capacity of Pulkovo Airport and the construction of the new Convention and Exhibition Centre are key current factors in the development of St. Petersburg.
Those words were part of St. Petersburg Governor Georgy Poltavchenko’s speech to the Legislative Assembly on 24 April. “Today, development is undeniably focused on the south of the city. Taking into account the increase in the airport’s capacity to 17 million passengers a year by 2015 and the plans for ExpoForum, a major new convention and exhibition centre, there is the potential for Pulkovo to become a real driving force for growth in the surrounding area”, the Governor said.
The construction of the new ExpoForum Convention and Exhibition Centre not only meets the priorities of the city’s development, but is also fully in keeping with the strategy to enhance tourism. Earlier, at a session of the Legislative Assembly’s Tourism Commission, it was noted that the focus of the tourism industry in St. Petersburg over the next five years would be directed at supporting and developing conference and exhibition tourism, improving the transport infrastructure, and effectively implementing the city’s marketing strategy. As Alexander Shapkin, Chairman of the Committee for Tourism Development, pointed out, an important part of the strategic programme for the socio-economic development of the city is turning St. Petersburg into a centre for international events, conferences and summit meetings.
