St. Petersburg became the first Russian city to host representatives of Olympic committees and international sporting federations as they discuss global questions regarding the development of world sport.
The official opening ceremony began with an address to Convention participants by presidential aide Yuri Trutnev, who welcomed the attendees on behalf of Vladimir Putin: “We are all united by an understanding of the enormous social significance that sport has for the balanced development of both individuals and society. Thanks to brilliant performances and records set by outstanding athletes, and to the beauty and aesthetics of sport, millions of people today share the values of a healthy lifestyle.”
Governor of St. Petersburg Georgy Poltavchenko also addressed words of welcome to the delegates, noting that the SportAccord International Convention is a key event for the global sporting community and a source of new ideas for the development of international collaboration on sporting matters.
Jacques Rogge, President of the International Olympic Committee, spoke of the need to make important decisions in his address, reminding summit participants that one of the main aims of the Convention is to continue the battle against illegal betting, doping, and other violations that endanger the good reputation of sport.
SportAccord President Hein Verbruggen concluded the ceremony by expressing his gratitude to the Russian government representatives for their warm welcome to St. Petersburg, a city with a rich historical and cultural heritage. “Today is a celebration – the triumph of beauty, grace and health. The new information age offers us fantastic opportunities, but we must remember the great responsibility which is borne by us all.”
Around 2,000 people will participate in the Convention, which will be held in St. Petersburg until 31 May. These will include members of the Russian parliament, representatives of the Russian Olympic Committee, the directors of the World Combat Games 2013, the Sochi 2014 Organising Committee, and leaders of all-Russian sporting federations for Olympic and non-Olympic sports.
Arabia-Expo and the 11th Russian-Arab Business Council will open at Lenexpo Exhibition Complex on 30 May. This will be the first time that St. Petersburg has hosted these events, which play a significant role in strengthening Russian-Arab relations.
