7 Russian regions will take part in the recovery of the Baltic Water system
Besides Saint Petersburg, six other Russian regions will participate in the project: the Republic of Karelia, Kaliningrad, Leningrad, Novgorod, Vologda and Pskov Regions.
The agreement was signed by Aleksandr German, Chairman of the Committee on Natural Resource Management, Environmental Protection and Environmental Safety of Saint Petersburg, Dmitry Bannikov, Head of the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Vologda Region, Oleg Stupin, Minister of Natural Resources and Ecology of the Kaliningrad Region, Denis Belyaev, Chairman of the Committee on Natural Resources of the Leningrad Region, Aleksandr Yurchenko, Minister of Natural Resources, Forestry and Ecology of the Novgorod Region, Viktor Musatov, Chairman of the Committee on Natural Resources and Ecology of the Pskov Region, and Andrey Karpilovich, Minister of Natural Resources and Ecology of the Republic of Karelia.
Since Saint Petersburg is located in the closing link of Lake Onega – Lake Ladoga – the Neva River – the Gulf of Finland Water system (hereinafter referred to as the Baltic Water system), solution of issues related to recovery and preservation of the Water system is extremely relevant for the city, and requires the integrated approach.
As part of execution of the Order of the President of the Russian Federation No. Pr-1376 dated 08/03/2022, it is planned in 2025 to form a new federal project “Remediation of Water Bodies.”
In this regard, the Committee for Natural Resource Management of Saint Petersburg was one of key initiators of developing the separate federal project for preservation and recovery of the Baltic Water system.
The project provides for not only construction/reconstruction of sewage treatment facilities, but also clearing, recovery and rehabilitation of water bodies, measures for preserve aquatic biological resources, reducing the intake of pollutants with diffusion runoff, the set of necessary monitoring and research.
The events will affect the Ladoga and Onega Lakes, the Neva River and the Gulf of Finland, the Svir, Volkhov, Okhta, Izhora Rivers and other water bodies.
The need for developing such a project was approved and supported by the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia and the Federal Agency for Water Resources.
