“Ecology of Big City”: new participating countries, challenges of water, coastal and protected natural areas

On March 22–24, the EXPOFORUM will host the XXII International Forum “The Big City Ecology.” On March 20, the press conference took place at the Saint Petersburg Press Center of the Interfax News Agency, at which Ivan Serebritsky, Deputy Head of the Committee for Natural Resource Management, Environmental Protection and Environmental Safety of Saint Petersburg, Tatiana Kovaleva, Head of the Directorate of Protected Natural Areas (OOPT), and Sergey Voronkov, CEO of the EXPOFORUM International, told about features of the Forum.

Ivan Serebritsky told how the Forum geography will change.

“The participant composition has changed a bit, probably for obvious reasons. This year our Baltic neighbours will not come, but others will. Foreign experts from Myanmar, Vietnam, China, Belarus will join us. So, internationality continues. Environmental challenges still remain in the world agenda as an important issue, with caring and reasonable participants in this process wanting to communicate, and we will be happy to welcome them,” he said.

Tatiana Kovaleva informed that the Directorate of the Protected Areas of Saint Petersburg will hold the separate conference within the Forum, dedicated to prospects for developing educational tourism in protected natural areas.

“The priority in development of educational tourism, its trend is ecological paths, eco-routes. We will share our experience, discuss issues of developing eco-routes, ecological infrastructure in protected areas, organizing education, shaping ecological culture. Representatives of 45 constituent entities of the Russian Federation, including those from the Leningrad and Vologda Regions, Krasnodar Krai, the Crimea, regions of Siberia and the Far East, will take part in the conference,” she added.

The CEO of the EXPOFORUM International spoke about the Forum program and the unique novelties to be presented by the participants.

“There will be the Business Contacts Exchange, where more than 500 negotiations are planned to be conducted. Over 30 suppliers and more than 14 buyers will take part in them. Among them — “Red October,” Kirov and Obukhov Plants. New scientific developments will be presented by universities of Saint Petersburg. In particular, Gubkin Russian State University will demonstrate the technology of sorbent made of Sosnowsky’s hogweed for elimination of oil outflows. 46 events are planned in the business program. The participants will discuss issues related to protection of water bodies, waste management, changes in environmental legislation, development of protected natural areas and environmental education, as well as execution of federal projects within the national project “Ecology,” Voronkov said.

At the Forum, 9 regions of the Russian Federation will sign agreements on development of the particular project for environmental improvement and protection of the Water system “Lake Onega – Lake Ladoga – the Neva River – the Gulf of Finland.”

The Baltic Sea Day Forum will be simultaneously held with “The Big City Ecology.” Representatives from the coastal regions of the Russian Federation have been invited to the Forum, as they face similar environmental challenges in terms of climate change and water pollution.
