On November 26, the St. Petersburg International Scientific and Educational Salon opened in the EXPOFORUM Convention and Exhibition Centre. This largest event in the field of science and education has been held since 2005 and for the 19th time brings together representatives of universities, scientific organizations, government, and business.

The key theme of this year’s salon is «The possibilities of education and science for the accelerated growth of the national economy and the development of Russia’s spiritual and moral potential». More than 15,000 people will take part in the event, and the program includes over 150 events: from exhibitions and plenary sessions to lectures and master classes.

The official opening took place in the presentation and business area of Pavilion E. The ceremony was attended by Vladimir Knyaginin, Vice Governor of St. Petersburg, Dmitry Afanasyev, Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, Olga Vasilyeva, President of the Russian Academy of Education, and other distinguished guests.

The most anticipated event of the salon was the exhibition of the winners of the «Students of the City» competition. Graduates of 21 universities presented projects carried out at the request of the executive authorities. Among them are solutions for the improvement of green areas, projects in the field of digitalization of management and ideas to increase the availability of urban services. 72 winners of the competition will receive prizes in the amount of RUB 30 thousand.

Furthermore, the city’s Open Day is held at the salon, where educational programs from universities and colleges in St. Petersburg are presented. Special attention is paid to the career guidance of schoolchildren, for whom master classes, public talks and interactive zones are organized.

The salon is held as part of the implementation of the state program «Knowledge Economy in St. Petersburg». According to Andrey Maksimov, Chairman of the Committee on Science and Higher Education, this is a key part of the city’s strategy for the development of science and technology: «St. Petersburg is shaping the knowledge economy by supporting science, higher education, and youth initiatives».

In parallel with the Salon, St. Petersburg Congress «Professional Education, Science and Innovation in the 21st Century» is being held. Its central event is the plenary session «The role of science and vocational education in improving the quality of human life». The salon will be open until November 28, giving participants the opportunity to exchange experiences and discuss the prospects for the development of education and science in Russia. Admission to all events is free for visitors.
